CRiS is the Central Registration and Identification Scheme. It started in 1992, it is run by the NCC group through NCC CRiS Limited, company 08353798, and every touring caravan built by an NCC member since then has a 17 character CRiS number, which is the caravan's VIN. The number is stamped on the chassis, usually on the A frame, and etched into the bottom corner of every window. From 2016 it is also on a VIN CHIP sticker inside the front window and in the front locker.
CRiS records the keeper of each caravan, the way the V5C does for a car. It is not legal proof of ownership, and it says so. Registration costs £20.95 once. A dealer registers a new caravan for you free. Transfer to a new keeper is free.
The check is for buyers of a used touring caravan. It says whether the caravan is recorded as stolen with the police, whether it has outstanding finance with the finance houses that report to CRiS, whether an insurer has written it off, and whether it is registered to a keeper. The keeper's name is only released with the keeper's permission.
It is the only check of this kind for touring caravans in the UK. No other site sells one, and CRiS says its public check is for consumers and not for resale. That is why our caravan report names CRiS and sends you there, and never claims to hold its data.
Two caravan policy wordings read on 24 September 2026 say the insurer cannot deal with a claim without the CRiS number, and that the keeper must hold the CRiS registration in their own name before a theft or total loss claim is processed. So a caravan that cannot be transferred at CRiS, because it is stolen or on finance, cannot be insured properly either. The buyer loses the caravan and the money.
This register is new and grows as owners and providers add to it. An owner registers free and can flag a theft within a minute of it happening, with the crime reference. A dealer, a finance house, an insurer, a storage site or a police force feeds it free by CSV or API and gets free lookups and a free API back. A buyer's report shows what is here, with who said it and when, and names CRiS as the place to buy the rest.
Motorhomes are different. A motorhome is a motor vehicle with a number plate, so the ordinary vehicle history checks cover it, and its MOT history is free at gov.uk. Our motorhome report reads the VIN and the plate, shows what this register holds, and tells you which vehicle check to buy.
